Sustaining For Generations to Come

Sustainability is part of BERNAS’ responsibility to the ecosystem that sustains the nation. Through practical environmental, operational, and community-focused initiatives, BERNAS works to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and create long-term value for future generations.

Reducing Impact,
Preserving the Harvest

BERNAS is improving the way rice is processed across its mills by adopting cleaner technologies that maintain quality while reducing environmental impact. These efforts include eco-friendly drying systems, husk-fired hot water boiler generators, efficient heat transfer systems, and air pollution control measures that support more responsible processing.

Giving New Purpose
to Every Resource

Guided by circular economy principles, BERNAS repurposes by-products from rice operations into useful resources. Rice husk, bran, brewer’s rice, and rice husk ash support uses such as bioenergy, feedstuff, and fertiliser, helping reduce waste while creating value across related industries.

Bioenergy

  • Rice husk is used as a renewable, carbon-neutral fuel
  • Lower emissions compared to conventional energy sources
  • Supports large-scale paddy drying using greener energy
  • Excess husk is supplied for pellets, bedding, and fuel use

Feedstuff

  • Ground rice husk is used as an alternative agricultural input
  • Collaboration with FGV Integrated Farming Holdings Sdn Bhd (FGVIF)
  • Bran and brewer’s rice are supplied to agricultural producers
  • Supports the needs of the livestock and agriculture sectors

Fertilisers

  • Rice husk ash (RHA) is rich in silica and carbon
  • Used in fertiliser production and plant growth media
  • Helps improve soil structure, air flow, and water retention

Through this approach, what was once left behind becomes part of a larger cycle — supporting growth in different forms.

Harnessing
Solar Energy

BERNAS is taking steps to harness solar energy across its facilities, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and supporting cleaner operations. Solar PV systems help power milling operations, with excess energy channelled through the NEM scheme where applicable.

Quality
You Can Rely On

Quality is central to public trust in every grain of rice. BERNAS’ MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 certified rice laboratory supports inspection, analysis, and quality monitoring across local and imported rice. Through recognised standards, trained personnel and reliable testing practices, BERNAS strengthens consistency, safety, and confidence in the rice supply.
